Rapist jailed 20 years after attack in Clapton

A man who raped a woman 20 years ago has been jailed.

Anthony Jordan, 50, of Susan's Road, Eastbourne, attacked a woman in her Clapton home and then returned a month later to burgle her.

It took advances in DNA techniques to finally bring the attacker to justice.

Jordan was originally caught on 16th June 1991 when he set off a panic alarm that had been installed after the rape.

He pleaded guilty to burglary in September 1991 and was sentenced to 18 months, but a charge of rape was discontinued.

Jordan was re-arrested in 2011 when DNA analysis of his victim's dressing gown using new techniques produced a one-in-a-billion match. It was part of a cold case review of the crime by the MPS Sapphire Command.

He was convicted at the Old Bailey in April of rape following a trial, and was sentenced on 9th May. He will spend 13 and a half years in prison.

Jordan - having broken in through a lounge window - struck at around 02.00hrs on 16th May 1991 when the victim, then aged 50, was attacked in her bed. He made off with £10, cigarettes and a lighter.

A month later he was arrested after tripping a panic alarm installed after the rape, having again broken a window to gain entry. He had handled and activated the panic button, perhaps without realising what it was. It alerted the police who quickly arrived and detained him.

Jordan declined to give evidence during the rape trial, but his barrister claimed DNA evidence could have been contaminated.

DC Jenny Thrower of Sapphire said: "We are pleased to report that justice has finally caught up with Anthony Jordan. He clearly thought he had got away with his crime, but thanks to advanced DNA techniques he was wrong.

"It illustrates that, even decades after a rape or other sexual assault, the Met will not rest until every investigative avenue has been exhausted."
