The Association of Kenyans in Italy and the Association of the Kenyan Clergy, held the long awaited marriage on 17th January.

The Wakenya Group was formed by merging the two old Associations. Last November, members of the two Associations voted to join forces and create the Wakenya Group with the aim of fostering unity between all Kenyans in Italy.

H.E Mrs. Ann Belinda Nyikuli, Kenya’s Ambassador to Italy attended the meeting in Rome which led to the official foundation of Wakenya Group. Other staff from the Kenya Embassy including Mr. Paul Kaliih, the new Head of Chancery and Mr. Robert Kobia, the First Secretary also attended the meeting.

After peaceful elections through the secret ballot, the following were given the mandate to lead the newly formed group: Mr. Wilson Kamami Mwangi (President); Rev. Fr. Cosmas Kagwe (Vice President); Ms. Grace John (Secretary); Mr. Simon Wambua (Treasurer) and Mr. Amani Mangi (Publicity Secretary). All the elected officials pledged to carry out their duties with diligence and selflessness.

They promised to promote unity of Kenyans and to help Wakenya Group grow into a strong and powerful body.
H.E the Ambassador also stressed on the importance of having such a body in a country where immigrants face hardships and especially in times of difficulties such as sickness and deaths.

At the end of the meeting all the members present gathered to have a meal prepared by some of them.
