Angelo Masetti: We need politicians who love ordinary people
Italy needs politicians who have the ordinary people’s interests at heart, says Mr. Angelo Masetti, an Afro-Italian candidate to the Regional elections in Lazio.
Mr. Masetti who is vying for elections on the Verdi party ticket, says the time has come for serious politicians to take a leading role in handling the society’s affairs.
Mr. Masetti has been actively involved in politics since he was 20 years old. A Lawyer by profession, Mr. Masetti began defending the rights of immigrants and asylum seekers in early 1980s.
From 1987 to 2003 he was in charge of the immigration’s department of UIL Trade Union.
Mr. Masetti is the spokesperson of the Italy-Somali Forum for Peace and Reconstruction, an organization that has been actively promoting the process of reconciliation in Somalia where a civil war has been raging for the past 19 years.
If elected a Regional Councillor, Mr. Masetti says he would be committed to fight for the rights of the weakest members of the society, namely the youth, the unemployed, the sick, the elderly and the immigrants. He would also continue the fight against racism and xenophobia.
Mr. Masetti says he is keen on ensuring that immigrants and their associations receive concrete support from authorities to carry out their activities.
He will also ensure that immigrants can actively participate in the public and social life, he says.
Mr. Masetti who is concerned about global warming, says he will give strong support to the production of renewable energy.
An opponent of the privatization of water, Mr. Masetti holds that water is a fundamental human right.
He says that citizens should be actively involved in all decisions which have an impact on the environment and quality of life.
