He'll promote dialogue between Nigeria and UK, & support development in Nigeria

Mr. Chuka Umunna, Member of Parliament for Streatham, has been appointed Vice Chair of the Nigeria All-Party Parliamentary Group.

Last May Mr. Umunna became one of the first ever MPs of Nigerian descent and is the first ethnic minority MP for one of the three constituencies covering the Brixton area, which is considered to be the Black capital of the UK.

All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) are composed of politicians from across all parties and focus on a specific area or concern, while many correspond to individual countries.

The Nigeria APPG exists to promote links between the UK and Nigeria and create a better understanding among British MPs of Nigeria and the challenges it faces, while supporting efforts to promote development and social justice in the country. It is chaired by Meg Hillier, Labour Member of Parliament for Hackney South & Shoreditch.

In June, Mr. Umunna was elected by his party colleagues to serve on the Treasury Select Committee, tasked with holding the government’s economic policy to account.

Commenting, Mr. Umunna said: “I am proud to have been made Vice Chair of the Nigeria group and I look forward to working with colleagues to help build dialogue between the two nations and support development within Nigeria.”
