The government will most likely approve a Legislative Decree prolonging the validity period of Permits of Stay. The application procedures will also be changed and the use of a new software is expected to make it possible for the applicants to be given appointments with the immigrations office at the time of submitting their applications.
The government is keen on simplifying the application procedures and drastically reducing the waiting times for renewal of Permits of Stay.
By prolonging the validity period of permits, the government may indirectly intervene on the new controversial tax on permits, saving immigrants from having to pay it frequently.
Integration Minister Andrea Riccardi yesterday told the Senate’s Constitutional Affairs Commission that they have agreed with Home Affairs Minister Anna Maria Cancellieri to eliminate the unfair or vexatious laws, unexplainable delays and slow bureaucratic procedures which humiliate foreign citizens applying for Permits of Stay, documents and certificates.
Mr. Riccardi said that they plan to meet territorial immigration Councils and Prefects for further consultation.
