Is it routine practice to duct tape deportees’ mouths? Govt asked

Democratic Party has asked Ministry of Home Affairs to confirm if to duct tape deportees’ mouths is “a normal police operation”.

The party made the call after it emerged that last Tuesday two Algerians were forcefully deported from Italy under very inhuman conditions.

On board Alitalia flight from Rome to Tunis, police officers restrained the immigrants using nylon handcuffs and duct taped their mouths.

Filmmaker Francesco Sperandeo, one of the passengers on the flight managed to steal a photo of the scene.

Without any doubt, the deportees were treated in an inhuman manner, stripped of their dignity and rights.

Mr. Sperandeo, who tried to protest said the officers arrogantly told him to return to his seat because they were “carrying out a normal police operation”.

Mr. Emanuele Fiano, head of Democratic Party’s security department urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to clarify whether it is a routine practice to use such inhuman practices while deporting immigrants.

What happened is unacceptable in a civil country where respect for a person’s human rights is obligatory regardless of their legal status, Mr. Fiano said.
