Integration Minister Andrea Riccardi has asked the Parliament to assume responsibility of reforming the citizenship law.
The minister called for a law that would enable children born in Italy of immigrant parents to become Italian citizens.
Due to the economic crisis, both Italians and immigrants are living through difficult times, Mr. Riccardi said.
He warned that the crisis could lead to intolerance towards immigrants.
The minister said he was working on effective integration paths which are against episodes of violence. He stressed that there was need of ensuring security of both Italians and immigrants.
Mr. Riccardi also revealed that they were reflecting on reforms of the Permits of Stay.
