Latest figures from the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) show that there is need for a law granting citizenship to children born in Italy of immigrant parents, Senator Roberto Di Giovan Paolo has said.
Mr. Di Giovan Paolo who belongs to the Senate’s European Affairs Commission said the figures also support the call for a law granting immigrants the right to vote in local elections.
Immigrants make substantial contribution to Italy’s economy, taking up many jobs Italians don't want, but which are very important in maintaining the welfare system, Mr. Di Giovan Paolo said.
He observed that in the past, right-wing politicians only considered immigrants as workers, but now time has come to give them more rights.
