UGL trade union has welcomed the Senate’s decision to prolong the validity period of job search permits.
The Senate’s Labour Commission has just approved Article 58 of the Labour Market Reform Bill which allows immigrants in Italy who have become jobless to be issued Job Search Permits valid for one year.
This is “good news,” said Marina Porro, Confederal Secretary of UGL.
She however said that one year was too short for immigrants who have lost their jobs to find new ones under the current crisis.
Immigrants are amongst those hardly hit by the crisis, and job losses, in addition to the new tax of Permits of Stay, Ms. Porro said.
She said that there was need of doing everything possible to facilitate integration of immigrants into the labour market, describing them as an important resource for the country.
Immigrant workers who have lost their jobs should not be left to become illegal immigrants or to go for undeclared work which in most cases leads to exploitation and working under inhuman conditions, Ms. Porro said.
