Citizenship law should be urgently reformed, Livia Turco, MP and head of Democratic Party’s Immigration Forum has said.
The story of Mario Balotelli shows that Italy has changed and that there is need of opening eyes to a million Balotellis who live in the country, she said, adding that Balotelli’s story proves wrong all who continue to say that it is useless to reform the citizenship law.
The Democratic Party has always criticized the current citizenship law terming it “unjust” and “not worthy of a civilised nation.”
Following pressure from the Democratic Party, next week the Parliament will start discussing the citizenship law reform. The party is pushing for a birthright citizenship law which if approved, would enable all children born in Italy to become Italian citizens.
Ms. Turco said it was unfortunate that the centre right parties continue to block the citizenship law reform.
She hopes that the story of Balotelli may make some of the MPs who oppose the reform reason and understand that Italy has changed thanks also to the second generation immigrants still waiting to become Italians.
