ACLI: No reason to postpone birthright citizenship law

There is no more excuse for postponing the approval of birthright citizenship law, ACLI Benevolent Institution has said.

ACLI made the remark in reaction to the latest survey by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) showing that 72,1% of Italians approve granting citizenship to children born in the country of immigrant parents.

The survey also revealed that 91,4% of Italians consider it right for immigrants to be granted citizenship after living legally in the country for a given number of years.

These figures show the outcome of the work done by the 'L'Italia sono anch'io' campaign which succeeded to collect more than 200,000 signatures to support the reform of the citizenship law and a proposed law to grant immigrants the right to vote in local elections, said Santino Scire', Vice President of ACLI.
