According to government estimates, up to 150,000 illegal immigrant workers in Italy may be regularised.
Integration Minister Andrea Riccardi said the law to regularise illegal immigrant workers was clearly asked for by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
He reminded politicians now criticizing the law that it was unanimously approved by all parties, including the Northern League Party.
Mr. Riccardi said it was a good move for the Parliament to demand for a law that gives employers of irregular immigrants a grace period to regularise their workers in order to avoid the sanctions.
Both the Parliament and government saw it right to give employers the possibility of regularising their workers right away instead of risking heavy sanctions, Mr. Riccardi said.
