It is an opportunity for converting other permits into work permits

25th August 2009: Question: Hello. I’m a non-European Union citizen. I came to Italy for studies and applied for the Permit of Stay for studies. When I applied for renewal of my permit, the Provincial Police Headquarters (Questura) issued the permit but my area police station (commissariato) refused to give it to me because I did not sit for exams. I wrote to the Provincial Police Headquarters explaining my problem and they replied saying that I had been issued a temporary Permit of Stay which will expire on 17th September this year. I’ve now decided to discontinue my studies. I’ve been working as a domestic worker since February this year. If I apply for regularisation, will my application be accepted? Thank you.

Answer: Yes, if you meet all the requirements, your application for regularisation will be accepted. The fact that you have a temporary permit which will expire soon doesn’t disqualify you from being regularised. The measure for regularising immigrants working as domestic workers is applicable to all, whether they have the Permit of Stay or not. You can be regularised if your employer declares that by 30th June 2009, you had been working for him for three months. This regularisation is meant for those doing undeclared domestic work, and you are one of them. The most important requirement is that you had been working for at least three months by 30th June 2009. This regularisation is in fact a good opportunity for those with other types of permits which don’t allow their holders to work, to convert them into work permits.
