Question: Hi! I’m a resident in Genova and I plan to marry my fiancée next month. My fiancée is a resident in Rome. Unfortunately he lost his job and therefore doesn’t have enough income to apply for renewal of his Permit of Stay. I’m a holder of the EC long-term residence permit and I have sufficient income to guarantee for his application to renew the Permit of Stay for family reasons. I’d like to find out if he can continue to live in Rome and use proof of my income in his application to renew his Permit of Stay for family reasons. Can we do this without me having to transfer my official residence to Rome? Thanks.
Answer: I would advise both of you to have official residence in the same City Council, even though you can actually continue to live in different cities. According to the Law, if one doesn’t have the required income to apply for the renewal of the Permit of Stay, he/she can add up his/her income to that of a family member living together with him/her.
