Zimbabwe based beauty, Gamu Maziva has been crowned Miss February winner in a fiercely contested round in the ongoing online pageant, Face of Zimbabwe.
The February contest, probably one of the most competitive in the history of the pageant saw a fierce battle between Gamu and another front-runner, Shamiso Chifokoyo.
In a bid to win public affection, contestants shared details of their charity engagements, received corporate endorsements and ‘spiritual encouragement’ whilst others established a network of fans lobbying for votes to support their campaigns on the group’s Facebook page.
With tempers sometimes flaring between different sets of supporters, the tense battle between contestants showed why the competition has increased in popularity.
While other pageants face challenges, Face of Zimbabwe appears to have gained momentum as a mainstream pageant. Commenting on Facebook, a fan of the contest, Abigail Kunaka wrote: “What is exciting about Face of Zimbabwe is that it is relevant, exciting, fresh and we get to see what the models are doing in the community to change real lives.”
Spiwe Sibiya, a former model and events co-ordinator based in Pretoria, described Gamu as having a confident and strong look, yet calm and down to earth. Spiwe is a new addition to the competition’s judging panel.
The rising beauty queen is signed to Harare based Spoken Stars Modelling Agency.
Another judge, US based singer CeeJay Besa said: “Gamu clearly looks like a woman of substance with a great personality and supreme beauty. She showed much passion for what she does, and we hope that she will do the same in representing her country as a tourism ambassador or in the various charitable causes she is engaged in.”
Commenting on the February contest, Face of Zimbabwe Marketing Director, Mike Tashaya said the enthusiasm and drive in the February contest was unlike anything he had seen before. “FOZ is unique and the momentum in 2012 has been immense. The grand finale in December is a show not to be missed and we are happy to be attracting such high quality contestants like Gamu,” Mr. Tashaya said.
To celebrate Gamu’s victory, one of the competition’s sponsors Platinum Lifestyle Estate is set to host a celebration party in her honour on 9th March 2012 in Borrowdale.
Face of Zimbabwe officials are due to attend the celebrations and are expected to engage with the competition’s fan base, prospective contestants and partners.
To kick off her charity calendar, Gamu will host a Fashion Show in Chisipite on the 31st March 2012. The event themed ‘We All are One’ will raise funds to buy medication and basic supplies for Mutemwa Leprosy Centre in Mutoko and Mother of Peace orphanage in the same area.
