The Law that introduced the Point-based Permit of Stay system is already in force, Home Affairs Minister Roberto Maroni has said.

Responding to critics against the Point-based Permit of Stay system which is about to be enter into force, Mr. Maroni said that the system was already introduced by the Security Law which entered into force in August last year.

He confirmed that they have agreed with Minister of Labour Maurizio Sacconi on the content of the Directive to govern the implementation of the Point-based Permit of Stay system.

Mr. Maroni holds that the Point-based Permit of Stay system is useful and will be appreciated by those who want to integrate into the Italian society and work in the country.

He said it is one of the most advanced measures in Europe as far as integration of immigrants is concerned.

There will be public institutions to help immigrants meet the set integration objectives. “If they’ll decide not to frequent these institutions, they’ll risk not having their Permits of Stay renewed.”

The objectives must be met within two years. Those who fail to do so will be given one more year to meet the objectives.

Mr. Maroni said that the Point-based Permit of Stay system show the Government’s commitment to promote integration of immigrants and it is a step in the right direction.
