There are almost 4,3 million immigrants living legally in Italy and registered in the Registry Office of their City Council of residence, a new report by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) shows.

Italy’s population only grows thanks to the immigrants in the country, the report shows. The country’s population now is 60,387,000.

According to the report, the number of immigrants arriving in the country has declined due to lack of job opportunities.

Immigrants mainly come to Italy through Decreto flussi (Quota Agreement – for non-seasonal subordinate work) and family reunification. The effect of last year’s regularization of domestic workers on the country’s population will only be felt in the course of the year.

Romania’s joining the EU has had an effect on Italy’s population since the number of Romanians coming to the country has increased by 20%.

By 1st January 2010, there were 4,279,000 immigrants in the country, 388,000 more than the previous year. Immigrants are now 7,1% of Italy’s general population.

The biggest immigrant communities are Romanians (953,000), Albanians (472,000) and Moroccans (433,000) who together account for 43% of immigrants in Italy.

The leading community from Asia is Chinese (181,000) while the leading community from sub-Saharan Africa is Senegalese (71,000).

From America, Ecuador leads with 85,000 people followed by Peru with 83,000.

From report it emerges that the average age of immigrants in the country is 31,5 years while that of Italian citizens is 44,2 years. They are therefore much younger compared to Italians.

Out of the 4,3 million immigrants who were resident by 1st January 2010, 22% were aged up to 17 years while 70% were less than 40 years old.

For the third consecutive year, the population of Italian citizens decreased. By 1st January 2010, the population of Italian citizens was 56,108,000 (46,000 lower than the previous year).

Minor immigrant children are now 9,2% of the population of minor children in Italy while that of children aged between 18 and 39 is 12,1%.

It is estimated that about 94,000 babies born in 2009 (16,5%), had an immigrant mother.

In 2009, immigrant women had a birth-rate of 2,05 compared to 1,33 of Italian women.

  For the commenter above...your totally wrong. Firstly Italians came to the Americas since the 1500's. Italians founded the Americas. There is every right for Italians to be there. Secondly, I live in Canada. There is not 10 million Italians here; that would mean 1 in 3 people. There is 1.4 million Italians in Canada.
  
  Italians are no longer emigrating to the Americas; rather obviously people are moving to Italy. Because Italy is the best country in the world...
